ZEC ready for weekend by-elections
THE Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has urged candidates, political parties and their supporters to adhere to the elections code of conduct and maintain peace throughout this weekend’s by-election process.
This message was conveyed by ZEC deputy chairperson Ambassador Rodney Kiwa yesterday during a press briefing ahead of the Ward 14 Chinhoyi Municipality and Ward 6 Epworth local board by-elections that will be held today.
The vacancies for Ward 14, Chinhoyi Municipality and Ward 6, Epworth Local Board, were created due to the convictions of the incumbent councillors for fraud and corruption.
Ambassador Kiwa confirmed that polling stations will open at 7 am and close at 7 pm.
“The Commission encourages candidates, political parties and supporters to observe the code of conduct and maintain peace before, during and after the by-elections,” said Ambassador Kiwa.
“The vacancies for Ward 14 Chinhoyi Municipality and Ward 6 Epworth Local Board arose as a result of convictions of the incumbent councillors for fraud and corruption, respectively,” he said.
The vacancies arose following the conviction of Nobody Makoni, the councillor for Epworth Ward 6, and Chipo Mlotshwa, the councillor for Chinhoyi Municipality Ward 14. “The nomination court for Ward 14, Chinhoyi Municipality sat on 3 June 2025 while the nomination court for Ward 6, Epworth Local Board sat on 30 June 2025
“Ward 14, Chinhoyi Municipality has two candidates, while Ward 6, Epworth Local Board has three candidates.
Ward 14 of Chinhoyi Municipality, which has a voter population of 2,339, will see Cde Solomon Bizwork of ZANU-PF battling it out with Hope Zimbiri, an independent candidate.
For the Epworth Ward 6 by-election, Cde Civilised Bushe represents ZANU-PF, Ms Alice Nyahunzvi represents MDC-T, and Mr Peter Nyapetwa is an independent candidate. Epworth Ward 6 has a voter population of 14,264.
“All material and human resources are in place: Ward Elections Officers, Deputy Ward Elections Officers, presiding officers and polling officers for all electoral centres have been recruited and trained,” said Ambassador Kiwa. Newsday
