War Vets Leader Under Siege Over ED2030
The Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) is embroiled in factional fights ahead of the Zanu PF conference, with reports emerging that individuals masquerading as state security agents are targeting members and leaders opposed to the 2030 agenda.
The agenda aims to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s tenure beyond 2028, contrary to the Constitution’s two-term limit.
ZNLWVA recently held a meeting in Victoria Falls where members decided not to participate in the succession battle, focusing instead on the welfare of liberation war veterans. The national executive members agreed that the succession battles, including the 2030 agenda, were a “sideshow” and that the executive should prioritize members’ welfare.
ZNLWVA national secretary-general Sam Parerenyatwa has allegedly been a victim of targeted attacks, losing mining and farming equipment after alleged functionaries targeted his farm in Centenary and mining venture in Guruve.
He was the first ZNLWVA leader to refuse to chant the “ED2030” slogan when asked to do so by provincial leadership.
The police have denied complicity in the attacks, with national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi saying they have no records of Parerenyatwa’s involvement in mining activities. However, sources claim that the culprits are being protected by the police, citing the failure to arrest individuals abusing the president’s name despite ample evidence.
The ZNLWVA’s stance on the 2030 agenda reflects the broader divisions within Zanu PF, with some members supporting Mnangagwa’s potential extension of tenure and others opposing it.
Mnangagwa has insisted he will leave office in 2028.
