Harare, Zimbabwe – A group of journalists from various media outlets attended a Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) training programme held at the Education Coalition of Zimbabwe (ECOZI) offices last Thursday. The workshop aimed to equip media professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to integrate GESI principles into their reporting and storytelling.

“GESI training is crucial for journalists as it enables them to produce balanced and inclusive reporting, which is essential for promoting social cohesion and understanding,” said Dr. Sillah, Training Officer at ECOZI. “By understanding and applying GESI principles, journalists can contribute to a more equitable representation of issues affecting different groups in society.”

Wadzanai Chitiga, Programmes Manager at ECOZI, highlighted the significance of the training, noting, “Media has the power to shape narratives and influence public perception. By incorporating GESI principles into their work, journalists can play a significant role in promoting inclusivity and challenging stereotypes that perpetuate inequality.”

During the interactive sessions, participants discussed ways to incorporate GESI perspectives into their reporting on various topics, including social issues, politics, and economics. The training covered key topics such as understanding gender equality, social inclusion, and the importance of mainstreaming GESI in media coverage.

The ECOZI’s GESI training initiative is part of its efforts to promote gender equality and social inclusion in Zimbabwe. By equipping journalists with GESI knowledge and skills, the programme aims to contribute to a more equitable and just society.
