“Persecuted” Zhombe Teacher Doubles Grade 7 Pass Rate

A member of the Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) in Zhombe, who has reportedly faced persecution by the State, has more than doubled the Grade 7 pass rate at his school.

According to ARTUZ, the teacher, Godfrey Chanda, who teaches at Sengezi Primary School, achieved a 67.8% pass rate in the 2025 Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) Grade 7 examinations, up from 32% in 2024. ARTUZ said:

“In 2024, the best learner scored 17 units; this year, the best learner scored 9 units, followed by 10, 12, 13, 14, and 16. This is the amazing work that ARTUZ teachers do in rural areas.”

The union said that Chanda has been persecuted by the state through abductions, arrests, suspensions, and a forced transfer. It added:

“True to ARTUZ culture, Cde Chanda has remained loyal to the cause of providing the best possible learning instructions to learners.”
