Warriors ready to cause an upset against Egypt in AFCON opener
Zimbabwe’s senior national soccer team, the Warriors, are ready to cause an upset this Monday evening when they face Egypt in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) opener, star player Knowledge Musona has said.
Zimbabwe is in Group B together with South Africa, Angola and Egypt whom they are facing for the third time at the tournament.
The Warriors will be seeking a win against Egypt whom they have lost to in their two previous meetings in 2004 (2-1) and 2019 (1-0).
Overall head-to-head, the two nations have played each other 13 times and Zimbabwe has only won once, while Egypt dominates with 8 wins, the rest ending in stalemates.
Despite being underdogs heading into Monday’s clash, Musona is optimistic of a victory.
“It’s not our first time playing Egypt at AFCON, we hope our preparations will help us get a positive result.
“They are the best, but we are not here to add a number. We are ready to fight for our country and cause an upset.
“So, we are ready to ready for Egypt, every stage of this competition is important, so we are looking forward to get the desired result,” he said.
For the first time in history Zimbabwe is being led by a foreign coach Mario Marinica, who is chasing a record of booking a spot beyond the group stages.
Marinica was appointed last month as a replacement of German tactician Michael Nees who was fired for recording poor results. *_-NewZimbabwe_*
