Harare ranked one of the world’s safest cities

The Numbeo Crime Index says Zimbabwe’s capital city, Harare, is among the globe’s safe zones with a moderate to low crime prevalence rate in yet another positive tag likely to bolster the city as a preferable destination for business and tourism.

The indicators consider people’s perception of crime, how safe they feel during the day and at night, property crimes like burglary and theft, violent crimes such as assault and robbery, and even bias-related incidents.

As such, crime levels can vary a lot from city to city, and Numbeo’s Crime Index gives a snapshot of how safe or risky life feels in different places.

The index utilizes a 0-100 scale, where higher scores indicate higher perceived crime levels.

Accordingly, Harare is ranked number 67 out of 400 world’s cities with a much lower ranking when indexed against other African cities.

On the overall Crime Index, the Sunshine City enjoys a moderate ranking of 60,7 with a safety index of just 39,3. It is acknowledged that the level of crime is moderate although significant increases have been witnessed in the last five years.

The highest crime rate with a score of 88,01 is corruption and bribery. The risks when walking alone at night is considered very low with a score of just 32.5.

The index states that six of the 10 cities with the highest crime scores on the global are in South Africa with Pietermaritzburg being ranked the world’s deadliest city followed by Johannesburg, Durban, Port Elizabeth, Cape Town.

Lagos, the capital Nigeria, is also ranked the world’s seventh most dangerous city. *_-NewZimbabwe_*
