Mutasa Man Dragged To Court For Using “Mubobobo” On Daughters-in-Law

A family in Mutasa, Manicaland Province, has been thrown into turmoil by shocking claims that a father is sexually abusing his daughters-in-law using spiritual powers, a practice locally known as mubobobo.

The allegations were brought before Chief Mutasa’s community court, where Jonathan Nyaumwe accused his father, Luka (Luke) Nyaumwe, of spiritually interfering in their marriages.

Jonathan told the court that his father allegedly projected his image during intimate moments, leaving both daughters-in-law traumatised and struggling to maintain normal married lives.

He said the disturbing practice had been ongoing for some time, causing fear and confusion within their households. Said Jonathan:

“The problem is that whenever I try to be intimate with my wife, she sees my father’s face on me.

“The same thing has been happening to my younger brother and his wife. Every time they try to be together as a couple, his wife sees our father’s face.

“Our wives are terrified. We cannot be intimate because of what they see.

“This has caused tension in our marriages and suspicion among family members. We do not know what to do anymore.”

Jonathan said the family eventually took their father to a traditional healer to seek answers.

At the healer’s place, he was reportedly caught red-handed and admitted that, in his younger days, he had collected some luck charms. Added Jonathan:

“When we went to tell our sister what had happened, my father suddenly denied everything and said it was all lies.

“That is why we are now here before the court, seeking help.”

Chief Mutasa summoned the affected daughters-in-law to give evidence as the community court sought to get to the bottom of the extraordinary claims.

Both women confirmed the disturbing experiences, telling the court that they saw their father-in-law’s face whenever they tried to be intimate with their husbands.

Sekuru Luka, however, denied ever deliberately practising mubobobo or collecting charms for such purposes.

He suggested that, if the allegations were true, someone else could be using him without his knowledge.

Luka told the court that he only became aware of the claims after his sons confronted him and took him to a traditional healer. There, an alleged lizard was reportedly found in his jacket — something he said he did not know was there.

According to Luka, the healer said the lizard was linked to mubobobo and destroyed it.

The widower said he was deeply troubled by the allegations, particularly because they involved his daughters-in-law. He said:

“All I want is help. I do not want to continue terrorising my daughters-in-law if this thing is truly happening. I am an old man, and I want peace in my family.”

Luka added that he had no ill intentions and asked the court for help in finding a permanent solution to the alleged problem.

Chief Mutasa praised Luka for being honest in court and not wasting time by being evasive.

The chief then instructed the family to seek further help from a reputable traditional healer to cleanse and protect the household, stressing that unity and healing were more important than playing the blame game.

However, Chief Mutasa did not hold back when addressing wider societal concerns about mubobobo. He said:

“There are old men who are greedy and abuse these dark practices to feast on younger women. That behaviour is unacceptable and destroys families.

“This court will not tolerate elders who misuse their positions or age to prey on younger women through spiritual means.”

The case was adjourned to give the family time to follow the court’s directive and seek spiritual remedies, with Chief Mutasa emphasising the importance of reconciliation.
