Nkayi Man Gets 630 Hours Community Service For Sex with 13-Year-Old

A 23-year-old man from Nkayi has been sentenced to 630 hours of community service for engaging in sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl.

Khulani Nkomo, from Mtshatshane Village, was found guilty of this crime by Bulawayo regional magistrate Mark Dzira.

He received a 24-month prison sentence, with six months suspended for five years, provided he does not commit a similar offence during that time.

The remaining 18 months were suspended on the condition that he completes 630 hours of community service.

During the prosecution, Jethro Mada told the court that on 30 July 2025, at around 11 PM, Nkomo lured the girl to his home. Said Mada:

“Nkomo and the complainant were reportedly in a relationship at that time. However, the court noted that the complainant is a minor at law; she cannot consent to sex.”

The court heard that the two spent the entire night together, during which they engaged in sexual intercourse.

The situation came to light three days later when the girl revealed what had happened to her mother after being questioned about her whereabouts.

A report was then made to the police, leading to Nkomo’s arrest. The girl was subsequently taken to Nkayi District Hospital for a medical examination.

Many believe Nkomo’s sentence is quite lenient, especially considering that a 36-year-old kombi driver, Godwell Mumba, was sentenced to three years in jail last month by Bulawayo Provincial Magistrate Themba Chimiso for having sex with a 14-year-old girl.
