Mother arrested over son’s death
A 26-year-old woman from Epworth, Hazel Makuyana, has been arrested for allegedly killing her five-year-old son, Mukudzeyi Makuyana, in a tragic incident tied to domestic violence.
This followed a heated argument between Hazel and her husband, 41-year-old Talent Nyakuwawa, over continued communication with her ex-husband.
Hazel forced Mukudzeyi to swallow rat poison, believing it would end their suffering soon after Talent left for work on Friday.
When Nyakuwawa returned home around 7 pm, he found Mukudzeyi lying unresponsive on the bed.
He rushed his son to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, where doctors fought to save the boy’s life, but he died on Saturday.
On Monday, Hazel called Talent to inquire about her son’s condition, which ultimately led to her arrest.
Harare provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, confirmed the arrest.
“A sachet of rat poison was found on the deceased’s bed. Talent lured Hazel to the hospital under the pretence that Mukudzeyi was still being treated. Upon her arrival, she was taken into custody,” he said.
During questioning, Hazel admitted to administering the poison to her son. She also revealed that she had also ingested the poison with the intention of ending both their lives.
