Two Zimbabwe Republic Police officers, Paul Matambo (36) and Evidence Jarahwenya (37), appeared in court facing allegations of misconduct after reportedly releasing a suspect without following official procedures. Both are stationed at Highlands Police Station.

The incident dates back to 23 January 2026, when the officers responded to a reported assault at 33 Vernon Avenue, Athlone, Greendale, filed by Moore Shoko. The suspect, Chinese national Zishan Zhang, was handcuffed and statements were recorded from him and Xiaomei Xu, as well as the complainant.

Prosecutors allege the officers failed to record the matter in the Reports Received Book (RRB), did not obtain proper authority, and released Zhang, who later fled Zimbabwe and is believed to be hiding in Botswana. Court papers claim Matambo attempted to cover up the incident by entering a misleading RRB report and that statements were later altered.

The actions are said to contravene the officersโ€™ duties, and the case highlights issues of accountability and procedure within the police force.
