ZRP clarifies legal and illegal lights in crackdown

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed which lights are legal and which aren’t in its latest crackdown.

The ZRP clarified the strict legal designations for such equipment. Red beacon lights, the police explained, are reserved exclusively for emergency services such as ambulances and fire engines. Meanwhile, the use of blue beacon lights is the sole prerogative of the country’s Presidium and the Police itself.

Authorities have emphasized that the fitting of blue lights or sirens on private, family, or company vehicles is strictly prohibited by Zimbabwean law. Motorists found in violation will face immediate consequences.

“Any motorist found driving a vehicle fitted with these lights will be arrested, vehicle impounded and the lights removed,” the ZRP stated.

However, the police moved to clarify a potential point of confusion, stating that the operation does not target vehicles with spotlights, strobe lights, or hunter’s lights, provided they are used for legitimate hunting purposes. Owners or drivers of such vehicles are expected to have the requisite hunting documentation to avoid any issues with law enforcement.
