PTUZ Rejects Job Evaluation Outcomes, Demands Revisions and Stakeholder Involvement

By Staff Reporter

The Progressive Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) has officially voiced its strong opposition to the recent Job Evaluation (JE) outcomes released by the Public Service Commission (PSC).

In a compelling statement, the union criticized the decision for its exclusion of key stakeholders, the perceived downgrading of teachers’ roles, and the overall lack of a merit-based grading system.

In a statement, PTUZ president Takavafira Zhou said their concerns include that the JE process failed to incorporate vital input from teachers and educational professionals.

“We believe that any evaluation impacting our members must include their voices and insights,” he said.

Additionally, the union highlighted concerning disparities within the grading system, asserting that many teachers faced unwarranted downgrades that undermined their professional status and contributions to the education sector. They argued that the current grading methodology lacked transparency and fairness, fostering a sense of disenfranchisement among educators.

In response to these developments, the PTUZ has called for the immediate suspension of the Job Evaluation process until a comprehensive review can be conducted. The union demands not only the restoration of previous teacher grades but also a consultative framework for future salary negotiations that includes input from all stakeholders.

“The education system cannot flourish without the support and respect for those who dedicate their lives to teaching,” the spokesperson added.

“We are committed to advocating for our members’ rights and ensuring that their hard work is recognized and rewarded appropriately.”

As the effects of the Job Evaluation outcomes continue to unfold, the PTUZ’s stance signals significant tensions within the educational sector and highlights the urgent need for reform aimed at equity and transparency.
