Rusape community left stunned as DNA results clear one man while court orders more tests to identify the real father.

A sensational paternity dispute has gripped Rusape, drawing intense attention at Chief Makoni’s community court and exposing a complex web of relationships involving Shelter Masango and members of the Gwasira family.

The case centres on uncertainty over the father of Shelter’s child, with two menβ€”Jacob Gwasira and Leeroy Gwasira, who are culturally recognised as father and sonβ€”being implicated, along with an unnamed taxi driver.

The situation sparked outrage in the community due to strong cultural taboos against close relatives sharing the same partner. Testimony revealed that Shelter was involved with both men at different times, although she initially denied knowing they were related.

Shelter first accused Jacob of responsibility, alleging he coerced her into intimacy. However, Jacob denied the claim, insisting their encounter was brief and pointing to other possible partners, including a taxi driver.

The case took another twist when Shelter later admitted she had also been involved with Leeroy, contradicting her earlier statements. Her mother confirmed the confusion, revealing the pregnancy was only discovered after seven months as the family struggled to identify the father.

DNA results later cleared Jacob Gwasira, shifting focus to Leeroy and the taxi driver, both now expected to undergo testing.

Chief Makoni instructed Shelter to be truthful and name all partners involved during the period in question to help bring closure to the matter. He emphasised that further DNA tests are necessary to establish paternity and ensure responsibility is taken.

The case highlights the role of traditional courts in resolving disputes, while also exposing deeper social issues including cultural norms, family structures, and the challenges women face in paternity cases.
