DDF boat capsizes on Lake Kariba

THE Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) says a Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (RIDA formerly DDF) boat capsized on Lake Kariba. The boat was allegedly carrying 160 passengers including children under four who did not require tickets, and five crew members.

The police said rescue efforts were underway, with further details expected as the operation progresses.

The same reports indicate that 15 bpdiesnhave been recovered, 74 people and anout 75 othersnremain unaccounted for.

In a statement posted on its social media platforms, the ZRP however said the boat had 90 people and five crew members on board when it capsized.

“The ZRP reports that a DDF boat with 90 people and five crew members has capsized in Lake Kariba. Rescue efforts are currently underway with more details on the situation to be released in due course,” the police said.

The exact number of casualties has not yet been confirmed.
