MNANGAGWA APPOINTS NEW MEDIA, GENDER COMMISSIONERS

HARARE โ President Emmerson Mnangagwa has appointed new commissioners to the Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC) and Zimbabwe Gender Commission (ZGC), in a move that brings new faces into two key constitutional bodies responsible for media regulation and advancing gender equality.
The appointments, announced in a statement dated September 12, 2026 and signed by Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet Dr Martin Rushwaya, were made in terms of the Constitution.
For the Zimbabwe Media Commission, the President appointed Susan Makore, Caesar Zvayi, Munyaradzi Hwengwere, Rufaro Ellen Mhandu, Thokozile Chitepo, Merit Thokozile Munzwewembiri, Tapiwa Mashakada and Tanaka Muganyi.
The ZMC is a constitutional institution with a broad mandate covering the promotion, development and maintenance of professional standards in the media sector, as well as safeguarding media freedom.
The appointments come at a time when Zimbabwe’s media landscape continues to face significant challenges, including the need to balance press freedom, professional standards, access to information and accountability.
Meanwhile, Cowen Dziva, Thokozile Ruzvidzo, Mildret Mushunje and Tsanangurai Chirau have been appointed to the Zimbabwe Gender Commission.
The Gender Commission is mandated to monitor issues concerning gender equality and ensure that gender-related constitutional provisions are implemented, including efforts to address discrimination and promote women’s participation in public and national affairs.
The appointments were formally recorded in presidential press statements dated September 12, 2026, with Rushwaya signing off the documents on behalf of the President and Cabinet.
The latest appointments are part of President Mnangagwa’s continuing changes to senior public institutions as Government seeks to strengthen constitutional commissions and align them with its broader governance and development agenda.
