South African hospital offers to donate beds to Zimbabwean public hospitals
JOURNALIST and social commentator Hopewell Chin’ono has revealed that a private hospital in South Africa has offered to donate manual hospital beds to public health institutions in Zimbabwe following concerns over the poor condition of hospital equipment in the country.
Chin’ono said the South African hospital approached him after reading a social media post in which he highlighted the state of beds in Zimbabwean public hospitals.
According to Chin’ono, the beds were due to be discarded after the hospital upgraded its facilities by replacing manual beds with new electric ones.
He said the hospital had offered to make the beds available to Zimbabwean public hospitals where they could still be used to assist patients.
In a post announcing the offer, Chin’ono invited officials from interested public hospitals to contact him so that he could facilitate communication with the South African institution.
” A private South African hospital has contacted me, offering to donate these manual hospital beds to any public hospital in Zimbabwe,” he said.
He added that the hospital would provide details of where the beds could be collected, but the receiving institutions would be responsible for arranging their own transportation from Benoni, South Africa, to Zimbabwe.
Chin’ono said interested public hospital officials could reach him through his email address, hopewell2@post.harvard.edu, to facilitate the donation process.
The offer comes against the backdrop of longstanding concerns about shortages of medical equipment, deteriorating infrastructure and inadequate resources in Zimbabwe’s public healthcare system.
The potential donation could provide additional equipment to public hospitals struggling to meet patient needs, although the number of beds available was not specified in his announcement.
