HARARE — Road accidents claimed 92 lives and injured 464 others across Zimbabwe in the first 13 days of the festive season, police said Wednesday.

Police recorded 1,195 accidents from December 15 to December 27, with 61 of them being fatal, national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said.

He said human error, such as speeding, overtaking errors and recklessness, was the main cause of the accidents.

The death toll was lower than the same period last year, when 102 people died and 289 were injured in 1,480 accidents, Nyathi said. However, he said more people died on Unity Day, December 22, this year than last year.

“On Unity Day, five people were killed and 24 others were injured in 125 accidents, compared to two deaths and 18 injuries in 124 accidents last year,” Nyathi said.

He said eight people died and 78 were injured in 71 accidents on Christmas Day, while nine people died and 36 were injured in 82 accidents on Boxing Day.

Nyathi said the latest fatalities included five people who died on the spot Wednesday when a Blue Horizon bus collided with a haulage truck and a Mercedes Benz near Marondera, about 64 kilometers (40 miles) east of Harare. He said 40 passengers were injured, 15 of them seriously, and were taken to Marondera Provincial Hospital.
