A 28-year-old Chipinge man recently went berserk, and gruesomely struck a three-year-old baby with a hoe several times, resulting in her instant death after the child’s mother had refused to give him some vegetables he had demanded.

Benjamin Sithole struck the now late Agnes Sigauke with a hoe on her head, before he was wrestled and overpowered by the child’s mother, Ms Getrude Mashava.

Sithole left and proceeded to a nearby field, came back a few minutes armed with another hoe and struck Agnes again on the head. She fell down and died on the spot.

The tragic incident happened in Mwatsaka Village in Chief Mutema’s area.

Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka said investigations are in progress.

He said Sithole is a suspected mental patient.

“Sithole and the deceased are neighbours, and on December 30, Ms Mashava left home to collect some vegetables from her friend. Ms Mashava had the baby strapped on her back when they met Sithole who demanded that Ms Mashava give him some vegetables. Ms Mashava refused. Sithole, who was armed with a hoe, struck Agnes once on the back. Ms Mashava wrestled with Sithole and managed to disarm him.

“Sithole rushed to a nearby field and quickly returned armed with another hoe. He struck Agnes twice on the head. She fell down and died instantly. Ms Mashava screamed for help and neighbours came to her assistance. The community effected a citizen arrest on Sithole,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.

In an unrelated incident, police have launched a manhunt for a 27-year-old man who fatally struck his ex-wife with a machete after she had refused to drink beer with him.

The incident happened last week in Village T Musirizwi in Chief Mapungwana’s area.

Assistant Inspector Chinyoka said, Collen Mutuwira visited his ex-wife, Ms Elizabeth Musanwa (20). He spent the whole day with her.

He promised to buy groceries and clothes for their child.

They went together to his homestead and upon arrival, Mutuwira offered Ms Musanwa some beer, but she refused to drink it.

“He forced her to drink the beer before an altercation ensued. Mutuwira struck Ms Musanwa on the head with a machete. Ms Musanwa tried to escape, but she fell down. The accused struck her thrice on the forehead, on the head, mouth and left wrist and disappeared from the scene. Ms Musanwa sustained severe injuries.

“We are appealing to members of the public with information leading to the arrest of the culprit to contact their nearest police station. We do not condone acts of violence, and we always urge people to settle disputes amicably,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka. *ManicaPost*
