Five apprehended for stealing 98 carat diamonds

FIVE men are facing theft charges after they were arrested for stealing diamonds at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport.

The five were remanded in custody pending bail hearing set for this Monday.

Silas Chirume (54), Edward Jacob Gunda (62), Maison Phiri (37)

Steven Wahita (56) and Isaac Muripa (37) are facing charges of theft after they allegedly stole diamonds weighing 98 carats from a local diamond company.

Circumstances are that last month Anjin Investments Pvt Ltd undertook a diamond packing exercise in preparation for shipping of diamonds to the United Arab Emirates.

During packing, personnel from Anjin Investments Pvt Ltd, Minerals Marketing Corporation of Zimbabwe, a member from CID Minerals Flora and Fauna Unit Harare and the customer, were present.

The accused persons were part of the personnel responsible for packing 100 parcels into 10 bags before they were sealed in a trunk.

Allegations are that the five accused connived and managed to steal one sachet containing diamonds weighing 98.20 carats.

On the 3rd of May, the consignment was shipped to the customer in the United Arab Emirates who discovered that parcel number 39, containing diamonds weighing 98.20 carats was missing, upon receiving the consignment.

Minerals Marketing Corporation of Zimbabwe was notified of the shortage and reported the matter to the police leading to investigations.

On the 9th of May 2024 at around 9 am, detectives from CID Minerals Flora and Fauna Unit, obtained CCTV Footage showing one of the accused persons picking a sachet of diamonds and placing it in his right trousers pocket while his co-accused watched.

Upon arrest Chirume implicated his alleged accomplices and confessed they had sold the diamonds for US$20 000.
