Valentine Muzavati, son of imprisoned activist, laid to rest
CHITUNGWIZA – The funeral service and burial of Valentine Muzavati, the son of imprisoned pro-democracy activist Ms. Tambudzai Makokoro, will take place at Nyatsime Cemetery in Harare.
Thousands of mourners are expected to attend the somber event to pay their respects and show solidarity with his mother, who remains incarcerated for her political activism.
Valentine passed away on June 25th, 2024, at the Chitungwiza Central Hospital due to complications from a severe flu.
The community has come together to support the family, with the pro-democracy Welfare Bureau, led by Senator Vongai Tome, mobilizing financial and material support for a dignified burial. The bureau has also assisted Ms. Makokoro in requesting compassionate release to attend her son’s funeral.
His death has dealt a devastating blow to his mother, who is currently incarcerated at the notorious Chikurubi Maximum Prison following her arrest, together with 78 others as they commemorated the Day of the African Child, on June 16th.
The government’s crackdown on activists has drawn widespread condemnation from human rights groups and the international community. The calls for an end to political persecution and democratic reforms have grown louder, underscoring the urgent need for a fair electoral process in the country.
As the nation mourns the loss of Valentine, the focus turns to the plight of his mother and other imprisoned activists, and the need for a peaceful and democratic resolution to the political tensions in Zimbabwe.
