Zimbabwe reports 7,232 diarrhea cases amid concerns over preventable diseases

HARARE – The Ministry of Health and Child Care has documented 7,232 cases of common diarrhea in Zimbabwe during the past week, and five fatalities.

However, the situation remains concerning due to the high incidence of preventable diseases.

Of the reported cases in the week ending June 16, 4,029 were children under the age of five.

Notably, Mashonaland Central Province reported 1,032 cases, while the combined Mashonaland West and Mashonaland East Provinces each reported 1,014 cases.

Zimbabwe’s cumulative figures for common diarrhoea are 155,100 cases and 57 deaths.

In the same reporting period, the Ministry of Health recorded 855 malaria cases and two deaths.

Of these, 112 were in children under five years old. The provinces with the highest number of malaria cases were Mashonaland Central Province (456) and Manicaland Province (126).

The cumulative figures for malaria cases this year are 29 886, with 51 deaths.

The high incidence of these preventable diseases is a concern for public health officials, who are urging communities to take precautions and seek medical attention if symptoms arise.

The ministry has previously said it will continue to monitor the situation and work with local authorities to address the underlying issues contributing to the spread of these diseases.
