AU Special Envoy on Youth Chido Mpemba in Zimbabwe for Climate Change Youth Symposium
Chido Cleopatra Mpemba, the African Union Commission Chairperson’s Special Envoy on Youth Affairs, arrived in Zimbabwe yesterday evening for a one-week Youth Symposium and training program focused on climate change.
The event to be held in Bulawayo, aims to empower young people to address climate challenges & promote climate action.
“As the Youth Envoy, it is my duty to champion change on issues affecting Africa’s youth, I am convening this event and supporting the participation of 40 youth people from across Zimbabwe and some coming from other parts of Africa, including Nigeria, South Africa, to learn about this important cause & provide them with information on future opportunities to bring their voices to global governance related to climate change such as the Africa Climate Summit, UN Summit of the Future & Cop29,” Mpemba said upon arrival at Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport.
“Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second capital city, was chosen to host this interactive event and a city affected the most by climate change.
“Delegates from various youth associations, clubs, networks and rural communities will be participating, promoting inclusivity,” she said.
Representatives from the various ministries in Government have also been invited to interact with young people in the symposium.
Mpemba will conclude the youth symposium with a tree-planting day in Bulawayo. This activity encourages young people to take climate action in their communities and offset carbon footprints.
Mpemba has actively campaigned for climate change action among young people worldwide and has planted over 500 trees to date in Zimbabwe and across Africa.
