Huge incentives for Zim Olympians at Paris 2024

THE country’s seven Olympians are set for a windfall if they win medals at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games which take off on the 26th of this month.

Zimbabwe will be represented by seven athletes at the games which will run until 11 August.

The number has increased from five at the last edition where Zimbabwe failed to win a medal.

The Zimbabwe Olympic Committee (ZOC) revealed that it will honour gold medal winners with US$19 000, while silver medallists will collect US$7 000, with bronze medallists getting US$5 000.

Government has a policy to honour athletes, with Gold medal winners at international games getting another US$10 000.

ZOC is confident of Zimbabwe’s chances at the Olympic games.

“We have elite athletes in this year’s team who have been doing well consistently on the International stage. Look at what Isaac Mpofu has been doing then look at Makarawu as well how he has consistently been running sub 20 times in 200m. Those are times for elite athletes and with those times finals are guaranteed. So we hope that they will do well and bring medals. We don’t want to put pressure on them because we know they have been working hard and they also want to bring medals home,” said the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee President, Thabani Gonye.

The financial rewards are not limited to podium finishers, with athletes who qualify for any final set to get bonuses on a sliding scale.

Zimbabwe will be represented by long-distance runners, Isaac Mpofu and Rutendo Nyahora, rower Stephen Cox, sprinters Tapiwanashe Makarawu and Makanakaishe Charamba as well as swimmers Denilson Cyprianos and Paige Van der Westhuizen.
