Makarawu’s father prays Olympian son becomes world champion

AFTER his son was honoured by New Mexico City in the United States of America, Tapiwanashe Makarawu’s father believes the sky is the limit for the Zimbabwean sprinter.

Makarawu was one of the seven athletes that represented Team Zimbabwe at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he made it all the way to the 200m final, only to finish on sixth position.

It was out of such a performance that New Mexico City Mayor Sam Cobb declared Tuesday the 3rd of September Tapiwanashe Makarawu Day.

Makarawu wrote himself in the history books of local sport by becoming one of the three Zimbabwean sprinter to race in an Olympic 200m final, the other two being Brian Dzingai who competed in Beijing 2008 and Makanakaishe Charamba whom he was with in Paris.

“So proud of Tapiwa, we hope and trust that through God’s power, he will be a champion in the world and will raise the Zimbabwean flag,” said Richard Makarawu, who is the Olympian’s dad.

The 24-year-old sprinter recently graduated from New Mexico Junior College and is currently furthering his studies at the University of Kentucky, where he is studying psychology.

Makarawu’s father added that he never expected his son to sail that much in his career.

“Tapiwa did what we did not even expect it as parents. We thank God for giving us such a determined young man who is focused on his career,” he added.
