Traditional Healer (23) Arrested for Killing Prominent Herbalist (67) with Toxic Concoction

A young self-proclaimed traditional healer is under investigation after allegedly administering a toxic concoction that led to the death of a well-known herbalist. Dorica Masunungure (23) is being held by the police in connection with the tragic death of Emily Chiduwa (67), who passed away shortly after consuming the deadly mixture.

The incident, which has shocked the local community, took place in Mount Darwin, Mashonaland Central province. According to police reports, Masunungure had been working with Chiduwa, a respected herbalist in the area, and had convinced her that she needed a special cleansing ritual to enhance her healing powers.

Mashonaland Central police spokesperson, Inspector Milton Mundembe, confirmed the case, stating that it is beingj treated as culpable homicide. “I can confirm a case of culpable homicide in Mount Darwin where Masunungure gave a toxic concoction to the now-deceased Chiduwa, who died on the same date,” Inspector Mundembe said in a statement.

The events leading to Chiduwa’s untimely death unfolded in September when Masunungure reportedly approached the older woman, claiming that her herbalist abilities needed to be strengthened with spiritual powers. Masunungure prepared a mixture for Chiduwa, which she described as essential for the cleansing ritual. However, upon ingesting the concoction, Chiduwa began to experience severe adverse reactions, including uncontrollable vomiting and diarrhea.

According to witnesses, Chiduwa’s condition rapidly deteriorated, and she was rushed to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, she was pronounced dead shortly after being admitted.

As police continue their investigation, Masunungure remains in custody and is being questioned regarding her role in the death of Chiduwa. The case has sparked widespread concern over the risks associated with unregulated traditional medicine practices, particularly when healers with little experience or knowledge administer dangerous substances in the name of spiritual healing.

Chiduwa, who was well known in her community for her herbalist expertise, had earned the respect of many locals over the years. Her sudden death has left many in shock, as they mourn the loss of someone who had provided healing to countless individualsh in the region.

While the investigation is ongoing, police have urged the public to exercise caution when seeking traditional remedies and to report any suspicious activities to the authorities.

The tragic incident has reignited the debate on the regulation and oversight of traditional healers in Zimbabwe, with many calling for stricter controls to prevent similar occurrences in the future. For now, Masunungure faces potential charges of culpable homicide as the case continues to unfold.
