Divorce Victory: Wife wins four companies and fishing boat in settlement
Florence Sibanda, née Mugomba, secured a significant divorce settlement that included four companies, a fishing boat, and other properties after ending her 26-year marriage to Thandazani Sibanda. The High Court granted her ownership of several businesses and assets following the dissolution of their customary union.
Thandazani left their Waterfalls matrimonial home in December 2019, abandoning Florence and their three children for another woman. This prompted Florence to seek a divorce, which concluded with a favorable settlement for her. As part of the agreement, Florence now has the chance to buy out her ex-husband’s shares in two prime properties located in Binga and Kariba.
The couple’s marriage, which lasted for over two decades, saw them build a prosperous business empire together. During their union, they established four businesses—Thaflow Industrial Suppliers (1998), Zimroads Consultancy (Pvt) Ltd (1999), Civil Works Laboratory (Pvt) Ltd (2001), and SibThand Enterprises (Pvt) Ltd (2001). The proceeds from these ventures contributed to the acquisition of several properties, including houses in Waterfalls and Glen Norah in Harare, as well as Old Pumula and Nkulumane in Bulawayo.
The court’s decision ensures Florence retains control of the businesses and assets, securing her financial independence after the split. The outcome also highlights the importance of recognizing the contributions of both parties in a marriage, particularly when building and managing family businesses.
