Prophet Walter Magaya’s Bid for ZIFA Presidency Faces Criticism Amid Financial and Legal Scandals

Prophet Walter Magaya, the influential leader of Prophetic Healing and Deliverance Ministries, is being floated as a potential candidate for the presidency of the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA). However, several hurdles suggest he may not be the right fit to lead Zimbabwe’s football governing body.

While Magaya has made strides in business and religious ventures, critics point out that he lacks crucial experience in football administration. Leading ZIFA demands more than just good intentions—it requires someone with expertise in governance, football structures, and managing sports-related activities, areas where Magaya’s background falls short.

His financial record has also raised red flags. A prominent fraud case involving US$3 million continues to cast a shadow over his suitability for the ZIFA top job. Investors allege that Magaya lured them into a gold mining project with promises of high returns, which never materialized.

The ongoing court case claims he failed to back the investments with mortgage bonds on his properties, leading to doubts about his ability to manage large sums responsibly.

His football club, Yadah FC, has not been spared from controversy either. The club has been slapped with a transfer ban by FIFA over unpaid debts tied to player contracts, painting a troubling picture of financial mismanagement.

There are concerns that Magaya’s duties as a religious leader could conflict with the demanding nature of running ZIFA. Managing both a large church ministry and a national football body requires full attention, which could stretch him thin.

Magaya’s public image remains divisive, and his involvement with ZIFA risks deepening divisions in a community already yearning for stability. Adding to this is the potential conflict of interest stemming from his ownership of Yadah FC, which raises questions about impartiality.

Furthermore, his ongoing legal battle with Getbucks Microfinance Bank over unpaid loans only adds to the concerns about his financial discipline, casting doubt on his ability to lead ZIFA without tarnishing its reputation.
