Govt sets US$150 as minimum wage
Good news has arrived for the people of Zimbabwe as the government has finally announced the new minimum wages for workers. This decision is expected to bring some relief to many who have been struggling with low pay.
Recently, the government confirmed that civil servants will see an increase in their salaries. The lowest-paid civil servants will now earn $364 a month, up from $324. This increase of $40 will take effect retroactively from September 1, 2024.
The announcement was made by the Zimbabwe Confederation of Public Sector Trade Unions, which represents public sector workers. They stated that this wage review is a result of long negotiations between government officials and workers’ representatives.
“In the end, the employer committed to pay as follows; Review of salary by $40 across the board for the grades of Deputy Director and below with effect from September 1, 2024,” the union said. This means that those in Grade B1, which includes many entry-level positions, will see their salaries rise.
In addition to the salary increase, the government has promised to pay its workers an annual bonus over two months. The bonus for 2024 will be distributed in November and December, with details on how it will be paid to be announced soon.
