Police Target 13,550 Unregistered Kombis in Harare Operation

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has launched an operation targeting over 13,500 unregistered kombis and pirate taxis in Harare, in a bid to restore order on the city’s roads. The crackdown is part of ongoing efforts to address the growing issue of illegal and unregulated public transport services, which have contributed significantly to road accidents and disorder in the capital.

According to reports, there are approximately 16,500 commuter omnibuses operating in Harare, but only 2,950 of these vehicles are officially registered. This alarming statistic highlights the widespread non-compliance within the sector, with many operators bypassing regulations to avoid licensing and registration fees. The situation has exacerbated traffic congestion and safety concerns, leading to calls for action from various stakeholders.

The police’s operation comes after a recent meeting between law enforcement officials and transport operators, where the focus was on strategies to curb road carnage and lawlessness. In addition to targeting unregistered kombis and pirate taxis, the operation aims to reduce the number of accidents caused by erratic driving and overcrowding. With more than 13,500 unregistered vehicles operating without the necessary documentation, the ZRP’s efforts are seen as essential in restoring order.

“The operation is a direct response to the rising levels of lawlessness in the public transport sector,” a senior police officer said. “It is important for both passengers and operators to comply with traffic laws to ensure safety on our roads.”

The crackdown has been welcomed by many, especially commuters who have long complained about the dangerous practices of illegal transport operators. However, some transporters have expressed concerns over the enforcement, with fears that it may lead to disruptions in service. Despite these challenges, the ZRP remains determined to ensure safer roads in Harare and reduce the growing number of accidents linked to unregistered and illegal vehicles.
