18,779 touts nabbed in Mushikashika blitz

Over 18,700 touts have been arrested under the No To Mushikashika blitz, while 128 unregistered vehicles and those without number plates have been impounded.

In a statement, the police said that on Friday, they arrested almost a thousand people.

“On February 7, 994 arrests were made under Operation No To Mushikashika, bringing cumulative arrests to 18,779.

“So far, 759 touts have been arrested, while 128 unregistered vehicles without number plates have been impounded.”

Meanwhile, police last Friday noted with concern the persistent disruptions of public transport services at termini and undesignated pick-up points by touts, rank marshals, and hooligans.

In a statement, National Police Spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said these activities were not only disrupting public transport but also endangering commuters nationwide.

“Touts and rank marshals have been observed loading vehicles in the middle of roads and at undesignated places, leading to traffic chaos and obstructing smooth vehicular movement.

“This has not only worsened congestion in Central Business Districts across the country but also poses serious safety risks to both commuters and other road users.

“In some instances, touts and rank marshals, who are often visibly intoxicated, have been seen harassing and intimidating the commuting public. Others engage in violence, theft, and other criminal activities, creating an atmosphere of fear and discomfort among passengers,” he said.

Commissioner Nyathi issued a stern warning to these perpetrators and urged transport operators to refrain from hiring touts and bouncers, who are tarnishing the reputation of the transport industry and undermining its efficiency.

“The police have intensified efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible for engaging in illegal practices that jeopardize the well-being of the commuting public.” H metro
