Strengthening Local Governance: Workshop Promotes Sustainable Solutions for Improved WASH Services in Mash West

A workshop titled “Accountability in Action: Strengthening Local Authorities in City of Kadoma, Mashonaland West Province for Improved WASH Services” was held on February 13, 2025, in Kadoma City. The Institute of Local Governance, an initiative by the Berina Residents Association, hosted the event, which brought together various stakeholders to promote sustainable solutions for improved health, dignity, and livelihoods of residents.

 

The workshop aimed to strengthen local authorities in Kadoma City for improved Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) services. Councillor Michael Mabwe emphasized the importance of accountability in local governance, stating that local leaders must be accountable to their constituents. Lloyd Mujuru, an official from the Berina Residents Association, highlighted the role of the Institute of Local Governance in promoting good governance through technical assistance and monitoring for local authorities.

 

A key highlight of the workshop was a play performed by Berina Community Arts, which focused on WASH services. This demonstration showcased the power of arts as a tool for information dissemination and community engagement. Rosen Smith, a Ward 3 resident, appreciated the efforts of the Institute of Local Governance, expressing hope that the workshop would lead to tangible improvements in the community.

 

The workshop was attended by various stakeholders, including MP Gift Mambipiri’s representative, state actors, and agencies, CBOs, residents associations, YMCA, Ministry of Youth, Ministry of Women Affairs, and media representatives. By promoting sustainable solutions and strengthening local authorities, the Institute of Local Governance is taking a crucial step towards ensuring good governance and improved WASH services in Kadoma City.
