The inmate Luke Zinyengere, 29, subsequently engaged in a shootout with prison officers at the Harare Magistrates Court before hijacking a Mazda Demio which he used to escape.
Prison officer Donald Madzinga is expected to appear in court on Monday accused of aiding an inmate to escape from lawful custody, law enforcement sources told ZimLive.
Zinyengere was due for sentencing over an armed robbery at Quest Financial Services in Harare on February 25, 2024, in which over US$700,000 in cash was stolen.
Zinyengere was one of more than half a dozen suspects arrested over the raid, including two security guards who have been sentenced to 48 months in jail each for picking up some of the cash dropped by the robbers as they fled and failing to surrender it into evidence.
