Sakupwanya Brings Back Football Excitement Across Zimbabwe

HARARE — Scottland FC Club owner Pedzai “Scott” Sakupwanya has reignited national passion for Zimbabwean football, culminating in unprecedented fanfare in Mutare ahead of Scottland FC’s Castle Lager Premier Soccer League debut against Manica Diamonds.

The weeklong build‑up saw Scottland supporters embark on a province‑wide clean‑up drive Friday, led by Scottland Manicaland chapter chairman Chikomborero Chidzidzi and graced by the Province of Manicaland Affairs Minister Advocate Misheck Mugadza, EMA representatives, Mutare City officials and senior Sakupwanya family members. Some fans traveled from as far afield as Mutasa to sweep streets and collect litter, a first for a PSL club and an initiative praised by Mugadza as “unique and transformative.”

By Saturday, roadshows across Mutare had sold more than 2,000 club jerseys and plastered the city in Scottland’s green and white. Supporters—including some Manica Diamonds fans—gathered at Sakubva Stadium, turning the match into a near sell‑out. City authorities admitted they underestimated Scottland’s pull, leaving several gates closed and forcing thousands to be turned away Sunday.

The spectacle highlighted Scottland’s rapid rise at a time when traditional giants Dynamos and CAPS United have struggled for consistency. “The buzz rivals any pre‑match excitement we saw with CAPS, Dynamos or Highlanders in past seasons,” conceded Lloyd Chinawa, football administrator and long‑time CAPS supporter.

A Manica Diamonds official confirmed the encounter delivered the club’s biggest payday in years. “Scottland has become the PSL’s new paymaster,” he said, crediting Sakupwanya’s vision.

As Scottland FC’s community‑focused initiatives and on‑field swagger spread beyond Mutare, many pundits believe Sakupwanya has sparked a nationwide revival, proving that bold leadership and grassroots engagement can reshape Zimbabwean football’s future.
