Building on Government Progress: AFYFT’s Innovative Approach to HIV Support in Zimbabwe

By Rachel Murondi

In the heart of Zimbabwe, a beacon of hope shines bright for young people living with HIV. The Action for Youth Foundation Trust (AFYFT) is at the forefront of creating a safe and conducive environment for these individuals, aged 17-24, to navigate the complexities of their condition. AFYFT’s efforts are a complement to the Government of Zimbabwe’s initiatives in fighting against HIV and inequalities. By providing sensitive information and support, the organization is helping to bridge the gap in services for young people living with HIV.

One of the most critical areas of focus for AFYFT is supporting youth living with HIV in disclosing their status to their sexual partners. This can be a daunting task for many young people, filled with anxiety and uncertainty. However, AFYFT’s support has been invaluable in helping them navigate this process. Through its HIV & Psychosocial Support Project, AFYFT has managed to support 476 youth living with HIV in creating healthier relationships by facilitating the partner disclosure process. This has been an achievement for the organization and has had a profound impact on the lives of the young people involved.
“I was one of those who found it difficult to disclose my HIV status to my partner, but I was supported by Action for Youth Foundation Trust. In November 2024, I successfully disclosed my HIV status. As a Youth Program Representative, I’m now helping my peers to stand stronger with HIV disclosure,” says Chikomborero Chadoka 22.
“Tanaka Gupa, a 20-year-old young lady who has benefited from the HIV partner disclosure sessions, shares her personal experience: ”The HIV partner disclosure sessions have helped me make decisions that protect my sexual partner. I’ve learned that after disclosure, we can be happy together forever, built on trust and openness.” Tanaka’s quote highlights the impact of the HIV partner disclosure sessions on his life through the help of Action For Youth Foundation Trust.
The organization’s Youth2Youth Model is a key component of its work in this area. By facilitating safe space meetings and support groups for youth living with HIV, AFYFT is providing a platform for young people to share their experiences and support one another. These group meetings are facilitated by youth representatives who have successfully disclosed their HIV status to their partners. These representatives are well-placed to provide support and guidance to others who are navigating the disclosure process. The sense of community and solidarity that AFYFT is fostering is truly remarkable, and it is having a lasting impact on the lives of young people living with HIV.
