BULAWAYO โ A 32-year-old man from Njube, Ishmael Ndlovu, has been sentenced to five months in prison after stealing condoms, cigarettes, and a loaf of bread from Sai Mart Supermarket.
Ndlovu pleaded guilty before Tredgold Magistrate Mr. Maxwell Ncube, who ruled that three months of the sentence be suspended for five years, with two months suspended on condition of good behavior. He will now serve 105 hours of community service at Njube Police Station.
According to prosecutor Mehluli Ndlovu, on June 26, Ishmael was seen by security guard Hendry Ndlovu as he stashed 6 packets of condoms, two 10-packs of cigarettes, and a Proton loaf of bread into his jacket pockets.
In court, when asked why he stole, Ishmael replied:
“I just wanted to buy my kid some school shoes,”
โ a statement that drew gasps and laughter from the gallery, especially with the question on everyoneโs mind: why the condoms?
The stolen items, worth US$17, were recovered, and Ishmael was promptly arrested.
