Zanu PF Factionalism Hits Madhadha Liquor as Zimra Shuts Down Outlets

A popular liquor chain, Madhadha, has had seven of its outlets shut down by the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) in an operation allegedly accompanied by Central Intelligence Organisation officers. The move has sparked speculation that the closure is politically motivated, given the company’s links to Zanu PF’s internal factional battles.

Madhadha Liquor is owned by Danmore Mambondiyani, who is also the deputy secretary for administration in the Zanu PF youth league and son-in-law to former Zimbabwe National Army commander Anselem Sanyatwe. Sanyatwe is believed to be backing Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga in the Zanu PF succession wars.

Zimra refused to comment on the closure, citing taxpayer confidentiality. However, Zanu PF sources from Manicaland claimed the closure was politically motivated, with some fingering David Munowenyu, chief executive officer of Discovery Ambulance Services, for allegedly sponsoring the onslaught against Mambondiyani and other political opponents.

Munowenyu denied the allegations, saying they were baseless and that he had no influence in Zanu PF’s internal affairs. The closure of Madhadha Liquor outlets has highlighted the deepening factionalism within Zanu PF, particularly in Manicaland province.

The development has also raised questions about the role of intelligence officers in the closure of businesses and the extent to which Zanu PF’s internal power struggles are affecting the business environment in Zimbabwe. Mambondiyani was not available for comment, but the situation continues to unfold as more information becomes available.
