Seke Road accident survivor: “I thamk God for this life”

Twenty-four-year-old Vanessa Nyandoro is among the lucky few who survived Tuesday morning’s horrific road traffic accident at Hunyani Bridge along Seke Road, which claimed 17 lives.

The kombi she was travelling in, en route to Chitungwiza from Harare CBD, was carrying 17 passengers when it collided head-on with a 30-tonne haulage truck.

Speaking to H-Metro at Chitungwiza General Hospital, where she was taken for treatment after escaping the mangled kombi with back injuries, Nyandoro described her survival as nothing short of a miracle.

“I do not know how I escaped. I thank God for this life,” she said.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the tragic details of the accident in a statement issued late Tuesday.

According to Nyathi, the South Africa-registered truck, travelling towards the city centre, veered into the opposite lane and struck two pedestrians walking along the road island. Both pedestrians died on the spot.

The truck then collided with the Nissan Caravan kombi, dragging it off the road before overturning and landing on top of it, trapping the passengers inside.

Fifteen people in the kombi, including the driver, died on the spot. Four others, three from the kombi and one from the truck, were seriously injured and taken to Chitungwiza Hospital for treatment.

The victims included 10 females and 7 males. Bodies of the deceased were transferred to the hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations.

The crash ranks among the deadliest road traffic accidents in recent years along the busy Harare–Chitungwiza corridor.
