Chitungwiza Refuse Collector Dies In Freak Accident On Duty
The Municipality of Chitungwiza has announced the tragic passing of Simon Maketo, an employee in the Refuse Section, who died following a work-related accident in Manyame Park.
The Municipality said Maketo died while on duty during a refuse collection exercise.
The municipal refuse truck Maketo was working on encountered a stationary commuter omnibus obstructing its path.
Maketo, who was positioned on the right-hand side of the vehicle, reportedly panicked as the driver attempted to manoeuvre around the obstruction.
During the process, he is said to have struck his head against a precast wall before being hit again by the moving truck. He lost his balance and fell to the ground.
He was rushed to St Mary’s Clinic and later transferred to Chitungwiza Central Hospital by a municipal ambulance. Sadly, he was pronounced dead on arrival.
In a statement, the municipality described Maketo as a valued member of staff and expressed deep sorrow over the loss. The statement read:
Chitungwiza Mayor Cllr Rosaria Mangoma, Acting Town Clerk Mr Japson Nemuseso, councillors, management and the entire staff extend deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.
May the Lord guide and comfort the family during this very difficult period.
