Zvish man jailed for fictitious daughter’s death

A Zvishavane man has been slapped with an 18 -month jail sentence after he was convicted of attempting to prejudice Ecosure Funeral Cover of US$6 250 in accidental cover after he faked his daughter’s death.

Promise Banda (40) appeared before Zvishavane Magistrate Sengster Tavengwa facing fraud charges this week.

He was convicted on his own plea and sentenced to 18 months of which four months were wholly suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.

According to court records, on July 29, Banda unlawfully misrepresented to Ecosure Insurance Company (Econet Wireless Zvishavane) that his daughter Chipo Enia Banda had died.

Investigations revealed that Banda had forged a Child Health Card, changing details to create a fictitious dependent.

Using the forged documents, he acquired a burial order with registration number 526/25 from the Zvishavane District Registrar’s office.

He submitted the burial order and made a false claim online to Ecosure seeking to fraudulently obtain US$6 250 00 in death benefits.

Econet officials established that the supposed beneficiary did not exist and that Banda had acted intentionally to defraud the insurance company.

The matter was then reported to the police leading to Banda’s arrest. Midweek Watch
