Relief among kombi drivers, touts as suspected rapist is nabbed

THERE is relief among kombi drivers, conductors and touts in Harare following the arrest of Givemore Mutape, a tout who is being accused of raping a Grade 7 pupil in a parked kombi in the Harare CBD.

There has been tension between the kombi drivers, conductors, touts and the police in the wake of the rape of the pupil at the Rezende Street rank.

โ€œWe are relieved to hear about Givemoreโ€™s arrest, his actions tarnished our reputation,โ€ said one kombi driver.

โ€œWe do not condone sexual harassment in any form.

โ€œThe issue about tinted windows was started by this incident and it sparked a debate among transport operators.โ€

The girl was looking for transport to Marlborough when she was harassed by several touts at the rank.

In her attempt to escape, she sought refuge in an empty kombi and Givemore allegedly followed her and raped her.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest.

โ€œThe Zimbabwe Republic Police has apprehended a suspect in connection with the rape case that occurred at Rezende Parkade Rank on July 19, 2025.

โ€œThe victim was alone and was approached by touts and, in her moment of vulnerability, she was attacked.โ€

Givemore was arrested after a tip-off when he returned to the Rezende Street rank. _*HMetro*_
