SON FROM HELL: Man Torches Dad’s Hut after iron-bar rampage in Chegutu
A FAMILY feud in Chegutu turned fiery when a 22-year-old man went berserk and torched his father’s hut after smashing up doors with an iron bar.
The dramatic incident occurred on 13 September at Ndonga Village, Chief Ngezi in Mubaira. According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), who did not name the accused, the young man unleashed a violent rampage, leaving his father counting losses worth US$340.
“The offender destroyed three wooden doors with an iron bar before setting a thatched hut ablaze,” said NPAZ in a statement.
His destructive spree came to a screeching halt when the matter was reported to Mubaira Police Station, leading to his swift arrest.
Appearing before the Chegutu Magistrates’ Court, the man pleaded guilty to malicious damage to property, a violation of the Domestic Violence Act.
The court did not take the act lightly.
“The offender was sentenced to 10 months imprisonment of which two months were suspended on condition of good behavior and three months suspended on condition of US$340 restitution to the victim by 3 October 2025,” the statement read.
Failing to pay back his father could see him spending extra time behind bars.
The NPAZ reminded the public that domestic squabbles turning violent can have dire consequences.
“This case underscores how domestic violence and destruction of property carry serious legal consequences under Zimbabwean law,” said the NPAZ.
