Mwonzora Dodges Arrest Despite Child Maintenance Warrant
MDC-T president Douglas Mwonzora is facing legal trouble after a Harare Magistrate issued a warrant of arrest over his failure to pay child maintenance for five months, leaving arrears of US$2,500.
Attempts to get clarity from the Police on why Mwonzora has not been arrested, nearly two months after the warrant was issued, have so far been unsuccessful.
National Police Spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, promised to respond to inquiries from Masvingo Mirror, but no official statement had been provided by press time.
Speaking to Masvingo Mirror, Mwonzora claimed he was unaware of the arrest warrant, even as he confirmed the existence of the civil matter.
“I haven’t received the warrant of arrest you are talking about. I don’t deserve any warrant. This is a sniff campaign,” Mwonzora said.
The court had ordered Mwonzora in February 2024 to pay US$500 per month for his 10-year-old son, Getrude Chuma, including school fees.
The current warrant covers missed payments from March to July this year.
With August and September also unpaid, the total arrears have now risen to US$3,500.
Chuma expressed frustration with Harare Central Police for failing to serve the warrant on Mwonzora for the third time.
The case is registered under number M389.
