Ministry of Tourism releases press statement apologizing to a tourist who was denied access to Mbuya Nehanda statue by ZRP

The Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality Industry has moved to clarify circumstances surrounding an incident involving travel vlogger Davud Akhundzada, who was reportedly barred from accessing parts of the Mbuya Nehanda Statue site in Harare.

In a statement, the ministry expressed concern over the circulating video showing Akhundzada’s encounter, which sparked debate online about the treatment of tourists at national monuments.

“The Mbuya Nehanda Statue is a National Heritage Monument managed by the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage,” the ministry said.

“It stands as a proud symbol of Zimbabwe’s liberation history and identity. The site is subject to specific preservation and security protocols, and public access to certain areas may be limited for safety and security reasons.”

The Tourism Ministry, however, said it is taking “proactive steps” to prevent similar incidents and to improve the experience of visitors at cultural landmarks across the country.

“Through a Whole-of-Government Approach Strategy, and in coordination with our counterparts at the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, we are deploying Tourism Officers at key heritage and cultural monuments,” the ministry said.

“These officers will ensure seamless, well-informed and welcoming access for tourists while safeguarding our national heritage.”

The ministry also issued an apology to Akhundzada, stating:

“We sincerely apologise to Mr. Davud Akhundzada for the inconvenience caused and remain committed to ensuring that all tourists to Zimbabwe’s heritage sites enjoy safe and memorable experiences.”
