Ingezi Hurricanes Academy has climbed to the top of the Mashonaland West Division 2B West log after securing a hard-fought 1-0 win over Waverly United on Saturday. A solitary goal from veteran striker Shepherd Munetsi made all the difference, propelling Hurricanes to the summit with 69 points.
The match, played at Waverly Primary School grounds, was a tightly contested affair, with both teams creating chances but ultimately, it was Munetsi’s first-half strike that proved decisive. The goal, scored in the 37th minute of the first half, came after Shepherd Munetsi let loose a powerful shot from outside the box, sending the Hurricanes family into song and dance.
The first half belonged to Ingezi Hurricanes Academy, who dominated possession and controlled the midfield with Garnet ‘Zondo’ Meke dictating the pace of the game. The team’s midfield maestro made sure that the ball was distributed effectively, allowing Hurricanes to create scoring opportunities and ultimately take the lead.
Shepherd Munetsi, a winger, was giving the Waverly United defense a torrid time with his speed and skill, combining well with veteran striker Macgiven Aliya and Abel Chapasuka to trouble the Waverly defense.
In the second half, Ingezi Hurricanes continued to press, searching to increase their lead, but could not get the goal they needed. Waverly United grew into the game and in the last quarter, they were pressing hard, searching for an equalizer, but found the Hurricanes defense, marshaled by captain Dickson Dick, disturbing their raids.
Hurricanes’ coach, Takunda Magaya, praised his team’s performance, saying, “I am happy with the win, and I’m proud of the boys and the players showed great character and determination. We took our chances, and Shepherd Munetsi’s goal was the difference-maker. This win is a great boost for us, and we need to focus on maintaining our lead at the top of the table,” said Magaya.
Munetsi, the goal scorer, expressed his happiness, saying, “I’m happy to have scored the only goal that separated the teams and I am proud to score the all important goal and got the three precious points,” he said.
Captain Dickson Dick also praised his team’s performance, saying, “We worked hard as a team and executed our game plan perfectly. The goal was a great reward for our efforts, and we are delighted to be at the top of the table. We will continue to work hard and see this through to the end,” said the captain.
With this win, Ingezi Hurricanes Academy has moved ahead of Barcelona Kadoma, who currently sit in second place with 68 points. The win is a significant boost for Ingezi Hurricanes Academy, who will be looking to continue their good form in the remaining matches of the season. Barcelona Kadoma, on the other hand, take on stubborn VIP on Sunday in a tricky match.
