Urgent Action Promised: Govt To Rescue Struggling War Veterans

War veterans struggling with school fees, medical bills and funeral costs are set to benefit from urgent Government action.

A strategic plan unveiled in Masvingo yesterday promises cash payouts, welfare support and new opportunities in mining, farming and tourism — a move Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Affairs Minister Senator Monica Mavunga says is central to Zimbabwe’s 2030 vision.

Minister Mavunga addressed her ministry’s strategic planning workshop in Masvingo, saying the meeting will draft a four‑year roadmap for 2026–2030 aligned to National Development Strategy 2.

She emphasised that the plan will directly tackle welfare gaps affecting veterans.

“We are crafting a practical programme with clear actions and timelines,” she said.

She said the Ministry of Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Affairs, established in 2023 under President Mnangagwa, has created a solid platform to advance veterans’ welfare.

“Opportunities in mining, agriculture and tourism are now open, and this workshop will shape concrete strategies to ensure veterans benefit directly,” she said.

Veterans continue to face hardships with school fees, medical care and funeral costs.

Minister Mavunga pledged to press the Treasury to increase funding for their welfare.

“War collaborators and other veterans must receive the benefits they deserve,” she said.

She said the ministry is turning its enterprises profitable so they can fund veterans’ welfare.

She also confirmed that benefits for vetted war collaborators are ready for gazetting.

“Those who completed vetting will now start receiving their benefits,” she said.
