Three family members drown and die while fishing in Centenary tragedy

THREE family members from Munera Farm in Centenary drowned on Sunday during a fishing escapade.

The three, including the father, Steven Dzikani (50), his daughter Taurai Dzikani (22) from Kadoma, and their nephew Success Kamburungwe tragically lost their lives after drowning with the family having since been accorded a State assisted funeral following the tragedy.

Mashonaland Central provincial police spokesperson Inspector Milton Mundembe confirmed the death of the trio who were retrieved by the sub aqua team before their bodies were transferred to Bindura Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.

β€œCircumstances are that on 13 December 2025, Steven Dzikani of Kadoma visited his mother, Serenia Dzikani, for a family function and he was accompanied by his daughter, Taurai Dzikani and on the following day the trio proceeded to Munera Dam for fishing,”

It is reported that whilst at the dam Taurai and Success decided to swim before they drowned in the deep waters zone.

Unfortunately, in an attempt to rescue the duo, Steve also drowned in the process.

β€œTauya Dzikani a female adult aged 44 who is Success Kamburungweβ€˜s mother and Prisca Chatonda, a female adult aged 30, both of Munera farm, who were doing laundry at the dam tried to rescue the three but to no avail.

β€œIt pains that a family has lost three members at once in what could have been avoided and as police, we urge the communities to stay away from water bodies to avoid such tragedies, water bodies are a habitat of dangerous wild animals and reptiles that are equally dangerous,” said Insp Mundembe.
