Zimbabwean Bus Passengers Escape Death In Limpopo Pile-Up
Zimbabweans travelling to South Africa narrowly escaped death after their bus was caught up in a pile-up with a truck and a light vehicle about 11km outside Makhado in Limpopo Province on Tuesday morning.
The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety spokesperson, Matome Taueatsoala, said the bus driver was seriously injured in the crash and was rushed to the hospital. Said Taueatsoala:
“The Exo bus travelling from Zimbabwe to Gauteng was involved in the accident near Makhado, and only the bus driver, who was injured, was taken to the hospital.
“The rest of the passengers escaped unhurt, and they have found alternative transport to Gauteng.
“The serious accident occurred on the N1 North at the Witvlag turn-off involving a tanker, a cross-border bus and a hatchback vehicle.”
He said the road was temporarily closed after the crash and urged motorists to slow down and drive with extra care due to misty and rainy conditions in the area.
Taueatsoala added that travellers planning to use the route between Louis Trichardt and Musina were advised to delay their journeys, as there were long traffic queues in both directions.
He said alternative routes were available. Motorists coming from Musina were advised to turn right onto the R523 towards Siloam, then turn right to rejoin the N1 at Witvlag.
Those travelling from Makhado towards Musina were advised to turn right at Witvlag, then left onto the R523, before rejoining the N1 at Willispoort.
