Murder suspect in journalist Masalethulini’s case appears in court

The prime suspect in the murder of broadcast journalist Cordelia Masalethulini appeared in court on Wednesday and was remanded in custody until January 22.

The accused, Fungai Quintone Tawengwa (46), who was reportedly Masalethulini’s boyfriend, appeared before Harare magistrate Ms Ruth Moyo facing charges of murder.

During the court session, Ms Moyo informed Tawengwa that he was facing a third schedule offence, meaning only the High Court has the jurisdiction to grant him bail.

According to the prosecution, Masalethulini (45) was found dead under suspicious circumstances.

Her half-naked body was discovered by a security guard along Domboshava Road in Borrowdale.

Investigations into the tragedy are ongoing.

The Masalethulini family is awaiting police investigations before they can announce funeral and burial arrangements for Cordelia, who was allegedly murdered on Monday.

Cordelia’s sister, Brita said they do not intend to interfere with police investigations currently underway.

“The case is currently under police investigation,” Brita said.

“We will provide information regarding the gathering and burial arrangements once the police have concluded their inquiries.”
