Zimbabwe Avoids Condemning US Attack On Venezuela
Zimbabwe has sought to avoid a confrontation with United States President Donald Trump by refraining from directly condemning the recent attack on Venezuela and the capture of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.
The operation, carried out last Saturday by US special forces, reportedly involved armed assaults on both civilian and military targets in Caracas and other locations across the country.
While some nations, including Zimbabwe’s neighbour South Africa, have condemned the US action as a clear violation of the United Nations Charter, Zimbabwe has chosen not to criticise the military operation.
Posting on X, presidential spokesperson George Charamba said Zimbabwe’s stance on Venezuela is guided by the positions of the international organisations it is affiliated with. He added:
“She was party to pronouncements issued by these organisations.”
The United Nations, the Group of Friends in Defence of the UN Charter, the African Union, and the Non-Aligned Movement have all condemned the recent US military action against Venezuela, describing Washington’s operation as a violation of the UN Charter and international law.
Although Charamba initially seemed to mock the African Union’s statement, he now says the organisation’s position aligns with Zimbabwe’s stance.
