Mufushwa Advert Ends In Gruesome Murder Of “Customer” By Seller’s Husband
A 44-year-old man was killed after being lured to a homestead in Boroma, under Chief Murinye, following a WhatsApp exchange that began with a response to an advertisement for mufushwa (dried vegetables).
The suspect, 25-year-old Theophilous Mutikani, allegedly attacked and killed Edmore Rugara (44) on the night of 19 March 2026, after suspecting him of having an affair with his wife.
According to Masvingo Provincial Police Spokesperson, Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa, the tragedy was set in motion when Mutikani’s wife posted a vegetable advertisement in a WhatsApp farmers’ group.
When Rugara replied via private message, his response reportedly aroused Mutikani’s suspicion.
Convinced that Rugara was pursuing his wife, Mutikani took control of her phone and continued the conversation, posing as her to lure the victim to his home.
At approximately 8pm the following evening, Rugara arrived at the Mutikani homestead, believing he was meeting the woman.
He was persuaded to enter the house an hour later, at which point Mutikani allegedly launched a brutal attack with a machete, striking him multiple times on his right palm, back, and left foot.
Despite sustaining catastrophic injuries, Rugara managed to escape the scene. He ran approximately five kilometres to a homestead in Village 35, arriving at roughly 4:40am; however, he succumbed to his wounds before medical assistance could be reached.
Mutikani has since been arrested and remains in custody while investigations continue. Rugara’s body was transported to Masvingo Provincial Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
In light of the incident, Inspector Dhewa urged members of the public to refrain from using violence to resolve domestic disputes, advising them instead to seek mediation from family members, church leaders, or the police.
